"Just a few hours before midnight, a brief hush fell over the streets of New York City, as if someone were about to tell a grand story of mystery and adventure and needed quiet to begin."
Cities have an energy and history that is undeniable. York begins by giving us a tease of its history, then quickly pulls us into its present day, daring us to figure it out before the author is choosing to reveal it.
I found this book difficult to articulate and I loved it! The story seems familiar, yet new at the same time...full of contridictions. It is the future set in the past. This is a city with top hats, propriety and strong female characters that will take out any man who attempts to take advantage. This is a city of cobbled streets, old tiled lobbies, but hidden in their walls are electromagnetic elevators that zip, up, down & sideways. There is a century and a half year old cipher trying to be solved with technology from the past to save the future.
As our heroines, Tess, Theo and Jaime seem to get closer to the truth to save their home, the trio start to wonder if the machines from the past are finding a life of their own in the future. Intrigued? You should be.
