Molly Idle Illustrations

Molly Idle Illustrations

Let me first say how much I love this cover photo that I retrieved from an interview she did in 2013 (Danielson). The colors, scale and detailing remind me of an Edward Hopper painting. I love being able to see her linework and process!

In a matter of ten years, Molly Idle found quick success, illustrating, authoring and collaborating over a dozen books such as Flora and the Flamingo, Sea Rex, Zombelina and her newest Pearl. It is easy to see the influence of her years in the animation studio. Her illustrations convey movement and understanding with the simplest of linework.

Molly Idle’s illustrations have their own distinctive style. She is one of the illustrators that I can spot without looking for a name. I am drawn to Molly’s simplicity and the animated styling of her books. In her newest book Pearl, Molly has extended her lines and perspective, camouflaging her characters and conveying new movement that her other books have not. It’s quite beautiful!

Idle is successful in achieving conversation and movement with minimal or no text and is why I think she will continue to be successful in drawing readers to her stories.

Scroll the images below to see some of her covers and beautiful illustrations and follow the links listed in my references to read more about Molly Idle and her life as an illustrator, author and parent.

Enjoy!
